EMS in Brazil

Odessa Emergency Providers, a nonprofit in

odessa, TX, sent two Paramedics to Brazil for the World Congress on Emergency Ultrasound in March 2008.

The paramedics instructed emergency ultrasound techniques to medical students,  EMS personnel and physicians from countries from around the world assembled at the congress.  The Odessa Fire Department paramedics began using ultrasound in 2000 and have been recognized as the first paramedics in the world to do so. Ultrasound is used to evaluate patients for such critical conditions as internal bleeding and cardiac arrest.  Ultrasound is also used to evaluate patients with more common conditions such as pregnancy. Odessa Fire department EMS and Carestar are part of a multicenter study on prehospital ultrasound use along with EMS systems in Minneapolis, Minnesota and   Manhattan in New York City.
